5G
5th Generation of Wireless Technology
The 5th generation of wireless technology – called 5G – uses radio-frequency radiation (RFR) or microwave radiation. It encompasses both lower and higher frequencies than currently in use.
The rollout of 5G also includes the 2G, 3G, and 4G frequencies that have been used to date. As a result of local laws passed on infrastructure siting approved in municipalities all over the world, including NC, the “small cell” antennas used for 5G and 4G cell towers are now being placed closer to where North Carolinians live, learn and work.
The “small cells” of 5G are very powerful up close, and yet usually do not penetrate building materials when further away.
Some of the higher frequencies of 5G, called millimeter waves (MMW), have been reserved until now for radar and military interventions, with few independent, peer-reviewed studies to determine their long-term health effects. Some of the very concerning affects that have been studied are cited below.
The State of New Hampshire created a Study Commission on 5G. Their 390-page report of their research findings can be downloaded here.
Professor Kent Chamberlin and the New Hampshire 5G Study
Professor Kent Chamberlin, PhD, now retired as the Chair Emeritus of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of New Hampshire, explained in his testimony to the NH 5G Study Commission the need for setbacks with 5G small cells and cell towers, highlighted in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t85QgvfKNkE.
He is introduced in the video by Jim Wilusz, the Health Director of the Tri-Town Health Department in MA’s southern Berkshires.
5G Health Effects
- Significant evidence of cancer and reproductive harm was found in the European Parliament’s 198-page analysis of 5G Health Effects, written in 2021 by Dr Fiorella Bulgogi, renowned toxicologist of the Ramazzini Institute in Italy.
- Increased risk of permanent tissue damage was found by the Foundation for Research on Information Technologies in Zurich.
- “Biological Effects of Millimeter Wavelengths,” a 1977 paper by Russian scientist N.B. Zalyubovskaya was declassified by the CIA in 2012. The researcher found that “millimeter waves caused changes in the body manifested in structural alterations in the skin and internal organs, qualitative and quantitative changes in the blood and bone marrow composition…”
- The International EMF Scientist Appeal – signed by 225 scientists from 44 nations – called urgently upon the United Nations and its sub-organizations, the World Health Organization and all U.N. Member States, to create wireless safety standards for 5G and all generations of wireless technology.

- Scientific American published We Have No Reason to Believe That 5G is Safe in 2019, written by Dr. Joel Moskowitz, School of Public Health, UC Berkeley, and linked here.
- The lack of independent research on 5G safety has been questioned by several U.S. Congressmen in their congressional testimonies.
- Physicians for Safe Technology’s executive director Cindy Russell, MD published this stunning review of 5G health issues: 5 G wireless telecommunications expansion: Public health and environmental implications, Russell, C., 2018, Environmental Research, Volume 165, 2018, Pages 484-495, found at this link.
- Hundreds of protests worldwide have led to protective policies that are urgently needed. Numerous US cities and towns have passed ordinances to restrict 5G and the proliferation of wireless antennas near homes and schools, as detailed here.
