Opt Out of Smart Meters

Opt Out of Smart Meters

For those homes with Duke Energy: There is an opt-out program.  While not an analog meter, this digital meter should not emit wireless radiation.

Beware: There have been numerous reports of the opt-put meter still emitting wireless radiation, so it is essential to check this this with a reliable RFR meter or detector.

We recommend the simple and affordable Safe and Sound Classic II from Safe Living Technology. It does not have specific numbers measuring the radiation emissions, yet it does have a series of LED lights with categories of exposure. Currently below $170 at this link.  Get 5% off using the coupon code Blue-5, which can help with shipping costs from Canada.

Be sure that ALL wireless devices inside the home (including your phone) are turned off before measuring. Stand three feet in front of the meter to get the most accurate reading.

As of January 2022: Duke Energy is sometimes converting the “program code” of the resident’s current smart meter from 5200 to 5203 to turn off the radiation emissions. This should be verified by the resident with a radio-frequency meter/detector to be sure it has been done properly!

Please contact us here if you know of other utility companies in NC which are also offering an opt-out program

Direct Action: There are other solutions that require citizen and legal action to have smart meters removed. Please see StopSmartMeters.org page on Direct Action.

Shielding a Smart Meter

Shielding the smart meter is very possible using aluminum foil and HVAC tape:

  1. Wrap the smart meter in heavy-duty foil, leaving a hole the size of a quarter out the front (or out the side if you have a close neighbor). It is good to create a “hood” over the hole.
    2. Fasten the foil with HVAV aluminum tape, attaching it to the metal base of the meter.
    3. Poke two small holes in the bottom of the foil, to assure that no rain gets trapped inside.
    4. Cover the INSIDE wall with foil or some other reliable shielding fabric

Move all beds and other furniture where people sit, lay or stand as far away from the meter as possible, which will also reduce the electric and magnetic field coming off the meter.

If the smart meter is just outside of a sleeping space, consider this highly effective, though very expensive smart meter guard – the Iron Maiden with a Hatch  – which blocks all the wireless radiation inside and outside the home, as well as some of the dirty electricity. This is much more cost-effective than having the meter moved off the home.
